The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that Joni Pitkanen will not be playing this season due to a broken left heel sustained last season when he fell into the boards on an icing play. He did have surgery to repair the break but experienced a set-back that extended the 10-12 week recovery time. NHL.com had the following quotes from Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford:

“It’s unfortunate, Joni is a good player who was able to play a lot of minutes for us and he will be missed. We’ll now have to deal with it and move forward. We’ll explore all options and decide on how we’ll proceed.”

“I suspect Joni was hoping it would get better and that he could begin putting more weight on it. But the stability was not there.”

This is a definite hit to the Hurricanes roster. He has been ranked first or second in ice time for his past 5 seasons with the Hurricanes so it will be difficult to find a replacement for this season.
