Daily Poll: Ottawa Senators Captain

With the surprising (at least to me) signing of Daniel Alfredsson by the Detroit Red Wings there is a hole in the Ottawa Senators that needs to be filled. Looking around at various articles on the subject there seems to be three candidates in the running for this prestigious role of captain. These three players are Jason Spezza, Chris Phillips, and Erik Karlsson.

First we have Spezza who is the odds on favourite at the moment. The 30-year-old has spent his  entire career in Ottawa since he was chosen 2nd overall in the 20o1 entry draft. He’s pretty much beloved by Ottawa fans and is a pretty natural choice for the role of captain.

Second is Phillips who is the only guy that surpasses Spezza in seniority. He has been with the Senators since he was chosen first overall by them in the 1996 entry draft. As he and Spezza both have the A on their jerseys either would be a logical choice for captain.

Lastly we have the wild card, Erik Karlsson. He would certainly fit the trend of young captains, John Tavares and Gabriel Landeskog to name a few, and he is certainly one of the most talented Senators. His youth probably makes him the least likely candidate but crazier things have happened.
