Is a contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the stars for Phil Kessel? Not anytime soon according to the man himself. According to Chris Johnston of Rogers Sportsnet, Kessel said that he has not talked to the Leafs yet about a contract extension and he doesn’t want to negotiate during the season. Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reported that Kessel does not foresee talks starting anytime soon. With this being the last year of his contract the question on everyone’s mind now is: Will Kessel be donning the blue and white next season?
As much as I think the answer is no, it is too early to say anything, there is still an entire season and off-season left for the Leafs to sign him. However there are a few other notables that are in the last year of their contracts as well. Captain Dion Phaneuf is one of them. I cannot see the Leafs signing both Kessel and Phaneuf in the same year, especially since each one will want a lot more than they are worth. If I was the General Manager I would trade both of them by the deadline and get something for them rather than let them go as free agents in the off-season.
Another notable whose contract is coming up is Jake Gardiner. Although he has had his troubles last season, he is a valuable asset on the Leafs roster. He is a better place to spend the money than Kessel or Phaneuf as he is younger and will be the better investment.
