Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils has been voted onto the cover of NHL 14. The voting that started last year gave Philadelphia Flyers future captain Claude Giroux the cover over Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators. The battle of the finals was between Martin Brodeur and Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
What does it mean to have won? Not only are you on the cover of a video game, but you are the topic of many hockey conversations for the offseason. You have now become the face of the league until the next year when the vote is held again. But was this a vote of skill or popularity?
It’s obvious that Brodeur has been amazing throughout his career. So it’s hard to compare a newer Bobrovsky, but look at what each goaltender did this season. Brodeur’s biggest headline was when he scored his third career goal, which wasn’t really a shot by him, but he was the last Devil to touch the puck on a crappy play by the Carolina Hurricanes. Sergei Bobrovsky has been the face of the Columbus Blue Jackets since he got there. He virtually led the team single-handedly almost into the playoffs. The Minnesota Wild snuck in there with a win over the Colorado Avalanche. The team had jumped from last place last season to 9th place in the Western Conference, without star captain Rick Nash.
So who deserved to be on the cover from their play last season? I say Sergei Bobrovsky, but I don’t hate the fact that Brodeur won it. He has been my favorite goaltender, alongside Nikolai Khabibulin (EDM), since I started watching hockey when I was a little boy. I do love the way he plays, and I am glad to see him on the cover.
What do you think? Should Brodeur be on the cover or Bobrovsky? Even though we can’t change it now, I would like to receive your feedback. Comment below your choice and why you think that. I’ll reply to all of them when I can. Thanks for reading.
