The Calgary Flames called for desperate measures in desperate times the other day when they offered the Colorado Avalanche three first round draft picks in return for the number one pick in this years draft. The Flames are rebuilding, and were apparently willing to give up three first round picks (6, 22, 28, all this year) to get their hands on Seth Jones.
Jones is the number one prospect at the moment coming into the draft. Colorado finished with the worst record in the Western Conference and scored the number one pick in the lottery.
The true question here is, “Is Seth Jones worth three good prospects?” Would you essentially trade away Seth Jones, who may or may not be worth the number one pick, and take three good prospects later in the draft? Calgary has the number 6 pick in this years draft and acquired the number 22 pick from St. Louis in the trade for Jay Bouwmeester, and they acquired the number 28 pick in the trade that sent Jarome Iginla to Pittsburgh.
The draft is coming quickly. June 30th, all 7 rounds will be dealt and if the Flames are serious about giving up this much for one player, then they had better start thinking of a way to make the Aves front office do a double take.
Play general manager for a few moments and tell me what you think. If you were Colorado would you have accepted the trade? Or do you think Seth Jones is worth more?
