The Future of the Toronto Maple Leafs Part 2: Oh Captain My Captain

I’m not sure how many parts of this I’m going to do but based on most people’s feelings on Dion Phaneuf this is going to be the least liked. Now I already had an issue with Phaneuf as captain before the playoffs came, in my opinion he did not have the leadership skills required. Before you argue I am not criticizing his hockey skills (that’s a  whole other discussion), I am just saying that he is not the right choice for captain.

It was in the playoffs where it really stood out how unsuited Phaneuf was to his position. When you see a great captain like Zdeno Chara, who would have conversations on the ice with a frustrated Tyler Seguin and argue with the refs over blown calls that weren’t on him, next to Phaneuf, who I don’t remember seeing do anything like that, you really notice what it takes to be a captain. Phaneuf is also way to emotional to be captain. He gets mad and takes stupid penalties, which is not something you want to see from anyone, especially not the captain.

There are two players on the team that really stand out as leaders. You always see them on the bench giving  advice to others and talking to the refs when there is a problem. Those players are Nazem Kadri and Joffrey Lupul. I think either of them would make a great captain. It is clear from interviews that Lupul has that leadership quality that is necessary to be captain. However Lupul is very injury prone which would be his only downside. Kadri could definitely lead by example but he is still very young and it might be too early in his career for this much responsibility.
