Eric Gryba to Face Hearing for Devastating Hit on Lars Eller

Things get rough in the playoffs and further proof of that took place last night in the Montreal Canadiens game against the Ottawa Senators. Eric Gryba had a huge open ice hit on Lars Eller resulting in a 5 minute major for interference, a game misconduct and a disciplinary hearing scheduled for today. Eller was taken off the ice by stretcher and spent the night in the hospital under observation.

Bob McKenzie spoke about the hit last night on twitter according to him the hit wasn’t interference or elbowing so the sole thing Player Safety will be looking at is whether contact was made with the head first. McKenzie said that the NHL will be looking for body on body contact which looking at the replay might be the case. McKenzie also reminded everyone that if there is body on body contact you can hit someone in the head, even cause a concussion, and not warrant a suspension. The best thing McKenzie said was that the most important thing is that Eller is okay.

After the game the Canadiens said that Eller suffered a concussion with loss of consciousness as well as facial fractures and loss of teeth.  Gryba spoke to the media after the game about the hit:

“I stepped up to make a hit,” he said. “I kept my shoulder down. He received the puck by the time I hit him. I saw the replay. My elbow was down and there was no intent to hurt him whatsoever and I hope that he’s OK.

“I’m not out here to hurt anybody and it’s never good to seeing anything like that. I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.”

At this time it could go either way for Gryba, I am not certain a suspension will occur based on what I saw. Do you think he deserves a suspension? Share your thoughts in the comment box below, on facebook, on twitter (@kcapp22 or @TMMotS), or by email ([email protected]).

Update: Gryba has been suspended 2 games.
