Pavel Datsyuk could easily be described as the best player on the Detroit Red Wings. He is number one on the team in points (41), goals (13), plus/minus (+14), power play goals (7), game winning goals (6), and overtime goals (he is the only one on the team with any overtime goals and he has two) and he is second on the team in assists (28). He is second in the league in game winning goals and tied for second in overtime goals with Dustin Byfuglien and Marian Gaborik. However all of this is not why I have selected for Underdog of the Week. I have selected him due to his serious lack of media attention.
It would be really easy to say that Datsyuk is just as skilled as Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin. He may not have their numbers but he certainly has the hands to pull it off. Everyone knows this yet he doesn’t get near the attention or spotlight that Crosby and Ovechkin get. Often he is forgotten about when talking about the best in the league. This may be because he has been around for a while, the 34-year-old is not as shiny and new as the young guns that are Crosby and Ovechkin. With him leading the Red Wings this season in so many categories he is making a very strong case for the Hart Trophy even though the media seems to think that the only candidates are Ovechkin and Crosby. The Red Wings are still fighting for a playoff spot and if they manage to clinch Datsyuk will be the main person to thank.
In his career Datsyuk has scored 253 goals and had 506 assists. His career plus/minus is 222, in fact he has only finished 1 season in his career with a minus and it was only -2. Datsyuk has had two 87 point seasons with the Red Wings and two 97 point seasons. His lowest point total was 35 and was in his first season.
Datsyuk is passed over by the media far too often, so here is some media attention for you Pavel, hope you enjoy your time in the spotlight.
