Playoff Hockey, a Game Like no Other

The NHL playoffs are in my opinion the greatest playoffs in sports. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. The traditions and meaning of being in the playoffs are unparalleled in sports. Players and fans ride a roller coaster of emotion just to reach the playoffs. In a grueling 82 game regular season fans live and die with the twists and turns of their favorite team; with only one goal: get to the playoffs, and bring home the cup.

Reaching the playoffs is not only what hockey fans live for it is something that can change the direction of a club for years to come. When your team is in the race as a fan you pump your chest, you walk around with a chip on your shoulder, and a swagger to your step. It’s a matter of pride. It gives fans the chance to say my team is better than yours, if only for an off season. Just being in the playoffs can install hope and a new burning passion within a city and fan base.

Some fans think that the playoffs are a birth right, others go to bed dreaming of the chance to watch their colors skating in May. Teams such as the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and the New York Rangers expect nothing short then a playoff run; while other teams like the Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, and the Edmonton Oilers would love to get a sniff of the post season. Those same feeling are the same with in a given fan base.

As much as the fans live and breathe for playoff hockey, the teams need it as well. The New Jersey Devils, Columbus Blue Jacks , and the Florida Panthers, to name a few teams have a horrible time drawing fans into their arena during the regular season, but come playoff time those building rock like there’s no tomorrow. Just making it to the playoffs can help ensure a team’s future, and with that future new generation of adoring fans will have a chance to root for their teams.

The NHL playoffs are the life blood of a fan base, and team. Without the hope of a playoff run there are no fans, and there would be no reason to watch the NHL. It’s that time of year again, playoff hockey is just around the corner. Are you ready?
