With the trade deadline come and gone I have all this free time to write about things that are not trade rumors. My first idea is to do a feature every week on an under-rated player or underdog. Now by under-rated I mean someone who isn’t Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, or Steven Stamkos. I want to feature the guys who are in the background that no one ever really talks about but still make great contributions to their teams. This weeks player is John Tavares.
I know what your thinking, does John Tavares really qualify, and I say yes he does. He plays for the New York Islanders and it may be because I live in Toronto Maple Leafs country that I don’t hear about the Islanders as much but I still think this qualifies him to be the underdog of the week. He is second in the league for goals right now scoring his 23rd of the season on Tuesday night. He is above Crosby and Ovechkin but doesn’t nearly get the same amount of media attention.
Tavares has had 2 five game point streaks this season and 1 five game goal streak. Currently he is looking to extend a 2 game point/goal streak tonight when the Islanders take on the Washington Capitals, who he scored his 100th career goal against on March 9. He recorded his 4th career hat-trick on February 16 against the New Jersey Devils, and that week he was named the NHL’s first star of the week scoring 5 goals and 2 assists in 3 games.
Tavares has played 280 career games in which he has accumulated 107 goals and 134 assists. He has never played in the NHL playoffs but might get the opportunity this year since the Islanders are currently only a few points off from a playoff spot.
John Tavares is a great Canadian 22-year-old kid that deserves to be talked about just as much as some other players. Here’s some media attention for you John. Hope you enjoyed your time in the spotlight.
