The Pittsburgh Penguins have obtained Jussi Jokinen from the Carolina Hurricanes who will be retaining some of his salary. In exchange the Hurricanes will get a conditional draft pick. The first condition is if Jokinen plays in 25 percent of Pittsburgh’s playoff games and the Penguins make the Final round of the playoffs the Hurricanes will receive a 7th round 2013 draft pick. The second condition is if Jokinen plays in 50 percent of Pittsburgh’s playoff games and the Penguins win the Stanley Cup the Hurricanes will receive a 6th round 2013 draft pick.
James Mirtle got a quote from Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford:
‘Canes GM Jim Rutherford: “This deal is important for our team’s financial flexibility moving forward.”

This is interesting not only because I was pretty sure the Penguins were done with trading this year but also because of this quote from Rutherford. Could this mean another trade for Carolina today? Does this mean an off-season trade? Free Agent signing perhaps? All I know is that Rutherford must have been desperate to move Jokinen if he was giving him up for possibly the second last pick, last pick, or the last pick in the second last round (if he even gets that) while retaining part of his salary.
