According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, if Miikka Kiprusoff is traded by the Calgary Flames he will not report to the team he is dealt to due to family reasons. Kiprusoff became a father to his second child, a baby boy, last week. Kiprusoff does not have a no-trade clause in his contract, so the Flames are within their rights to trade him.
Alright here is my take on this whole situation, all the people who are saying that this is ridiculous and classless move obviously don’t understand the position Kiprusoff is in right now. Kiprusoff is 36 nearing the end of his career, he has been in Calgary for 10 years and has a newborn. It is a completely legitimate thing for him to not want to move with a day or two notice. In this situation he is putting his family first and I admire him for that. Putting it out there now that he will not report is a way of ensuring that a team won’t waste their resources on him. Waiting until he gets traded and refusing to report would be a classless move.
For all of you who still don’t understand where Kiprusoff is coming from picture this: You have a job (not in hockey). You love your job. You have been in the same place doing this job for 10 years. You are close to retirement and have banked enough money that you are set for life. You have a wife and two children, one is a newborn. Then you are told by your boss that you might have to move somewhere, they don’t know where yet, but if you do have to move you only get a day or two notice. What would you do?
I hope this changed some minds because Kiprusoff really doesn’t deserve to get flak for this. I know hockey fans don’t like hearing this (I don’t like hearing this) but it is just a game. Kiprusoff put his family first and does not deserve to be condemned for it.
