The Calgary Flames are in a peculiar position with the NHL trade deadline under two weeks away. Currently sitting in fourteenth place in the west and six points back of eighth (with games in hand on ever team), the Flames don’t look overly promising to make the playoffs. Rather rebuilding the franchise looks like the most logical decision for Jay Feaster and it’s no surprise to see the plethora of players that have found their name in the rumor mill.
Leading the pack is captain Jarome Iginla who has been the top name on the rumor circulation and whether or not he’ll be moved by April 3rd. Yesterday, Katrina informed us that Bob McKenzie of TSN says that a deal involving Iginla is now in process but didn’t confirm which teams were in the running.
This morning, Randy Sportak from the Calgary Sun highlights a list of teams that he has heard are rumored to be seriously interested in the Flames captain and they include the Bruins, Penguins, Flyers, Red Wings, Canucks and Kings. No real surprises here except maybe the Flyers who, should they acquire Iginla, would make a statement that they are willing to give it all to make a push for the playoffs despite being one of the most surprising teams in their inconsistent play this season.
As far as the rumors affecting Iginla’s play, the captain isn’t letting the chatter creep into his mind and alter his on-ice performance.
“I said, at the beginning of the season, I wasn’t going to talk about all the other scenarios because it becomes a headache for the team and the guys that are trying to focus. We are in a race right now, and that’s where the mind is.”
The captain isn’t the only marquee name out of Calgary that could be on the move in the next two weeks. Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester has also been rumored to be a potential trade target with the St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, Red Wings and Flyers said to be “sniffing” around according to Sportak.
The asking price is said to be significant right now, but with a large cap hit that Bouwmeester carries and if the Flames should continue to fall behind the playoff race in the next ten days, the Flames could lower their demands in order to move the veteran blue liner.
Kiprusoff brings a playoff resume that many clubs may be looking to acquire. The Toronto Maple Leafs are said to be one team that may look to add a veteran goalie by the deadline and with all the Roberto Luongo rumors that have surrounded the Leafs, Kiprusoff could be a dark horse in the situation.
George Johnson of the Calgary Herald also hears that the Chicago Blackhawks are kicking the tires on Kiprusoff as they try and bolster their roster in what could be a deep and long playoff run.
