The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenseman Mike Komisarek on waivers. Komisarek spent all but 4 games this season watching the team from the press box. I guess he got sick of it because he waived his no-movement clause. If he is claimed by another team he will report to them but if not he will report to the Leafs AHL affiliate the Toronto Marlies. Most believe that he will not be claimed but anything can happen.
My co-editor Derek Stykalo believes that the Edmonton Oilers will likely put in a claim. This makes a lot of sense to me, the main problem most teams will have with Komisarek is his cap hit, but the Oilers have an abundance of cap space due most of their star players still being on entry level contracts. The Oilers are looking for veteran defense and although Komisarek might not be the most talented option he is the most affordable at the moment. He only has one more year left on his contract so he won’t cause a problem re-signing any of the aforementioned stars as they can just let him go once his contract is up.
I think that Komisarek’s time playing for the Leafs is up and will likely remain in the AHL until his contract is up if he is not claimed or traded. The Leafs have so many other defensmen that are more talented and deserve spots on the team, the truth is they don’t need Komisarek.
UPDATE: Komisarek has cleared waivers, will report to the Toronto Marlies.
