The Detroit Red Wings have been the busiest team in the NHL today. Just a few minutes ago they announced the signing of unrestricted free agent, Kent Huskins to replace the injured Carlo Colaiacovo on the blue line. Now the Wings have recalled forward Gustav Nyquist from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL to replace the injured Mikael Samuelsson according to TSN.ca.
Samuelsson will miss tonight’s home opener against the Dallas Stars after he aggravated his groin in last night’s action against the Columbus Blue Jackets; a game the Wings won in a shootout. Samuelsson was reportedly dealing with the groin injury prior to tweaking it last night. A timetable for his return has not yet been confirmed.
Nyquist has been a top point producer for the Red Wings affiliate in Grand Rapids this season, registering 14 goals and 26 assists in 39 games; good for a point per game average.
The former 4th round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft did appear in 18 games with the Red Wings last season, scoring one goal and adding 6 assists. He also played in four playoff games for Detroit, failing to register a point before the Wings were bounced from the first round by the Nashville Predators.
Earlier this morning we reported that forward Todd Bertuzzi could return to the Red Wings lineup as early as this Friday. To make room for Nyquist, Detroit has placed Bertuzzi on the injured reserve list.
