It is crazy to think that a 15 year old kid who isn’t eligible to play in the NHL until 2015 at the earliest just became the youngest hockey player ever to sign an endorsement deal with a major company. But apparently thats what just happened.
Liz Mullen over at the Sports Business Journal broke the story on Monday about Connor McDavid being close to signing an endorsement deal with Reebok/CCM and Yahoo’s Puck Daddy confirmed the deal today.
McDavid who was the 1st overall pick in last year’s OHL draft (oh by the way he’s 1 of 3 players ever allowed to enter the draft as a 15 year old) currently has 17 goals and 20 assists for 37 points in just 32 games for the Erie Otters while drawing plenty of comparisons to NHL superstar Sidney Crosby. Those comparisons should continue as Crosby signed his deal with Reebook/CCM when he was 17, a full 2 years older than McDavid.
So with all the hype, all the accolades flowing in and McDavid putting up numbers as a 15 year old in a very competitive OHL, it makes it easy to see why Reebok/CCM would want to lock-up the youngster. Speaking with the Sports Business Journal, Reebok/CCM vice president of global marketing Glen Thornborough had this to say about McDavid and the deal:
“We want to align with the best in the world, and we believe Connor McDavid is in that class. I won’t get into the terms of it, but it would obviously extend into when and if he is in the National Hockey League. It is not an everyday occurrence in the industry that a player like Connor comes along. We are not in the habit of signing kids that age, but there are special occurrences and this is one.”
High praise for a 15 year old kid, but when you’ve already been compared to Sid the kid what’s a few more roses thrown at your feet?
In closing, this could be great for Reebok/CCM or just a waste of money as we already know its great for McDavid as he’s technically getting paid to play hockey before he even reaches the NHL. Not to mention all the free swag he’ll receive, but if McDavid is able to live up to the hype and someday become an NHL star then Reebok/CCM would essentially become the face of hockey with Crosby and McDavid both under contract. Either way keep tabs on McDavid, as his stock seems to be rising everyday and he’s not even 16 years old yet.
