AHL: Weekend Recap

The American Hockey League season is just three days old, and with no games on the schedule tonight, it’s a good time to take a quick look at this past weekend and how things look so far.

  • Ten of the 30 teams in the league have a 1.000 win percentage.
  • Just one team – Lake Erie – has played three games. 22 have played two games, while seven teams have played only one game so far.
  • Leading the Eastern Conference are Springfield, Manchester, Norfolk and Bridgeport, each with four points and a 2-0 record.
  • Leading the Western Conference are Abbotsford, Chicago, Texas and Lake Erie, with four points each. Lake Erie is 2-1, while the other teams are 2-0.
  • Bridgeport and Abbotsford lead the league with 10 goals-for. Meanwhile, Binghamton is the best team statistically in goals-against, having allowed just one goal.
  • In the team’s three games, the Lake Erie Monsters have accrued an astounding 72 penalty minutes so far.
  • Syracuse left wing Cory Conacher leads the league with five points (2-3) in two games played. There are five players tied for second, with four points each.

Friday, October 12 – seven games

  • Milwaukee vs. Grand Rapids – Admirals win, 3-2. Cehlin (MIL) with two goals on three shots. No “plus” players on Grand Rapids. 10,834 attendance, stars: Cehlin (MIL), Andersson (GR), Mueller (MIL).
  • Manchester vs. Providence – Monarchs win, 3-1. Providence scored first, but Manchester had three unanswered goals for the win. 10,665 attendance, stars: Loktionov (MCH), Tardif (PRO), Jones (MCH).
  • Syracuse vs. Rochester – Americans win, 6-5. Shootout. Corey Tropp & Tyler Johnson two goals each. Tropp injured; did not return. 8,589 attendance, stars: Mancari (RCH), Conacher (SYR), Tropp (RCH).
  • Bridgeport vs. Connecticut – Sound Tigers win, 6-4. Cizikas and Newbury two goals each. Niederreiter with three points. 8,148 attendance, stars: Newbury (CT), Niederreiter (BRI), Cizikas (BRI).
  • Oklahoma City vs. Lake Erie – Monsters win, 2-1. Agozzino scores his first AHL goal. No plus- players on Oklahoma City; no minus players on Lake Erie. 12,011 attendance, stars: Agozzino (LE), Aittokallio (LE), Thomas (LE).
  • Worcester vs. Norfolk – Admirals win, 4-2. Stalberg with two goals for the Sharks. Five players on Norfolk with plus-2 rating. 5,004 attendance, stars: Bodie (NOR), Holland (NOR), Stalberg (WOR).
  • Peoria vs. Abbotsford – Heat win, 4-1. Walter and Baertschi with a goal and assist each for the Heat. Akim Aliu penalized for abuse of officials. 3,840 attendance, stars: Taylor (ABB), Baertschi (ABB), Street (ABB).

Saturday, October 13 – 14 games

  • Oklahoma City vs. Lake Erie – Barons win, 3-2. Second of back-to-back matchups between the two teams in Cleveland. Roy (OKC) with 37 saves in the win. 4,136 attendance, stars: Schultz (OKC), Marincin (OKC), Carey (LE).
  • Manchester vs. Albany – Monarchs win, 2-1. Kolomatis with two goals, both on the power play. Loktionov with five shots. 5,072 attendance, stars: Kolomatis (MCH), Wiseman (ALB), Jones (MCH).
  • Providence vs. Bridgeport – Sound Tigers win, 4-2. Watkins with a goal (empty net) and assist for the Sound Tigers. Sauve with five shots for Providence. 7,624 attendance, stars: Poulin (BRI), Niederreiter (BRI), Landry (BRI).
  • Rochester vs. Toronto – Marlies win, 3-1. Toronto captain Ryan Hamilton with two goals; defenseman Mike Kostka with two assists. Rochester defenseman Brayden McNabb with four shots. 7,921 attendance, stars: Hamilton (TOR), Gardiner (TOR), Kostka (TOR).
  • Portland vs. Adirondack – Phantoms win, 6-3. Schenn with two goals and an assist for the Phantoms. Eight Phantoms players with at least a point. Portland goaltender Johnson with 42 saves. 4,801 attendance, stars: Couturier (ADK), Roe (ADK), Miele (POR).
  • Hamilton vs. Grand Rapids – Bulldogs win, 4-3. Palushaj, Geoffrion and Dumont score for the Bulldogs. Lone goal in shootout scored by Michael Bournival. McCollum 33 saves in loss. 3,880 attendance, stars: Hoggan (GR), McCollum (GR), Parkes (GR).
  • St. John’s vs. Springfield – Falcons win, 4-2. Erixon with two assists. Pasquale with 29 saves in the loss. 6,151 attendance, stars: Kubalik (SPR), Calvert (SPR), Erixon (SPR).
  • WBS vs. Binghamton – Senators win, 2-1. Smith with lone point for the Penguins. Tangradi, Payerl, Claesson, and Borowiecki with five penalty minutes each. 3,838 attendance, stars: Lehner (BNG), Silfverberg (BNG), Jessiman (BNG).
  • Worcester vs. Norfolk – Admirals win, 4-3. Maroon with two goals. Smith-Pelly with two assists. Shootout – Sheppard with a goal for Worcester, Palmieri and Holland score for Norfolk. 4,049 attendance, stars: Smith-Pelly (NOR), Guenin (NOR), Maroon (NOR).
  • Hershey vs. Syracuse – Crunch win, 4-3. Both teams with 10 shots each in the first period. Conacher and DiSalvatore with a goal and assist each. Each team scored a power play and shorthanded goal. 6,434 attendance, stars: Conacher (SYR), Johnson (SYR), DiSalvatore (HER).
  • Rockford vs. Chicago – Wolves win, 1-0. First shutout of the AHL season. No goals in regulation; game decided by shootout. Pirri lone scorer for Rockford; Schroeder, Sweatt and Haydar score for Chicago. Connauton (CHI) with seven shots. 14,505 attendance, stars: Lack (CHI), Hutton (RFD), Haydar (CHI).
  • Texas vs. San Antonio – Stars win, 2-1. Fortunus, Petersen and Shore all score their first goals of the season. Selleck (SA) with 17 penalty minutes. 7,439 attendance, stars: Fortunus (TEX), Nilstorp (TEX), Shore (SA).
  • Charlotte vs. Houston – Checkers win, 3-1. Faulk with two assists. Charlotte’s last goal (Samson) on empty net. Hackett with 35 saves for Houston. 8,132 attendance, stars: Peters (CHA), Brodin (HOU), Hackett (HOU).
  • Peoria vs. Abbotsford – Heat win, 6-2. Brodie with three assists. Abbotsford with two powerplay goals. No goals scored in third period. 2,416 attendance, stars: Brodie (ABB), Horak (ABB), Baertschi (ABB).

Sunday, October 14 – six games

  • St. John’s vs. Connecticut – Ice Caps win, 3-2. Dekanich with 35 saves in 59:56 ice time. Newbury with his third goal of the season. Alexander Burmistrov with two assists. 2,081 attendance, stars: Machacek (STJ), Tremblay (STJ), Jean (CT).
  • Adirondack vs. Springfield – Falcons win, 4-0. Second shutout of the AHL season, league-wide. Craig and Bass with two points each for Springfield. 2,109 attendance, stars: McElhinney (SPR), Craig (SPR), Audy-Marchessault (SPR).
  • Lake Erie vs. Toronto – Monsters win, 4-0. Goals by Walker, Barrie, Pock and Walker, including an empty-net goal at 13:13 of the third period. Pickard with 40 saves in the win. 4,472 attendance, stars: Pickard (LE), Pock (LE), Carey (PE).
  • Rockford vs. Chicago – Wolves win, 5-3. The second of back-to-back games between the two teams. Jeremy Morin with two goals, St. Pierre and Leddy with two assists each. Ice Hogs with two power play goals. 5,113 attendance, stars: Longpre (CHI), Morin (RFD), Connauton (CHI).
  • Houston vs. San Antonio – Rampage win, 3-2. Charlie Coyle and Jason Zucker get their first goals, while Jacques, Rallo and Robak tally for Houston. Zucker and Coyle also each added assists. Wright (SA) with six shots. 4,092 attendance, stars: Robak (SA), Markstrom (SA), Zucker (HOU).
  • Charlotte vs. Texas – Stars win, 4-3. Shootout. Eakin scores twice in regulation. Vincour and Boychuk with two assists each. Jerome Samson lone scorer for Charlotte in the shootout, while Fraser and Benn scored for Texas in the shootout. 5,072 attendance, stars: Eakin (TEX), Benn (TEX), Boychuk (CHA).
