Don Cherry: Why I Like Him

Don Cherry is a well known man in the Hockey World. He is known for the coaching he did and playing 1 game for the Boston Bruins. He is also known for his well expressed opinions. If he has something to say, he will say it. I love people like that. I wish more sportscasters were like that. I nicknamed my brother Derek “Don Cherry” because he is the same way.

The one thing that I don’t get is why people don’t like him. I know people who have sat through multiple seasons of American Idol, listening to Simon Cowell bash contestants, but when Don Cherry does it, to about the same extreme, everyone hates him and thinks he’s an idiot. I think there are too few of these people. Everyone needs to have a little Don Cherry in them. Everytime there are two Canadian teams playing, I turn on the Canadian channel and wait to see what he pulls out of his “Coach’s Corner” segment.

He just recently hit it big with a rant about the Toronto Maple Leafs, an Ontario team, without an Ontario-born player on the roster. “Every team in the National Hockey League has a guy from Ontario. Except one. Guess who it is,” Cherry said. “It’s Ontario’s Toronto Maple Leafs. If you want American college guys, if you want Americans, you got the team. It’s the only organization in the world in Toronto, in Canada, that cheers when Canada loses.” He then made this statement: “Burke goes to my bosses and says that I’m a bad guy because I said something — ‘vicious’ I think the words were — about his coach. Two weeks later, he fires him. Figure that one out, folks,” Cherry said at the start of the show.

Many people know how to get their point across to the other side politely, but this man has no fear, no remorse. He will go for the neck and get the clean cut and kill every single time. He knows how to get his point across, whether polite or not (which is mostly impolite). I sure as heck idolize him. I wish I had half the guts as he does, because I could be going places in life.

Like I mentioned earlier, many people don’t like him. Everyone who sticks their neck out like Mr. Cherry is obvious going to have a fan bas
