A Day in the NHL: Depth Signings Around the League

by NHL

Not many headline-generating signings yesterday, but there were plenty of depth moves. And as we all know, depth moves can be where championships are won and lost.

-The Edmonton Oilers signed forward Ryan Keller to a one-year, two-way contract. Keller split the season between Ottawa and Binghamton and scored the Cup-winning goal in the Calder Cup finals. The Oilers also awarded Theo Peckham with a one-year contract yesterday.

-Calgary has signed defenseman Anton Babchuk to a two-year extension. Babchuk split last season between Calgary and Carolina. The deal is worth $5-million. Calgary also signed tough guy Guillame Desbiens.

-The Detroit Red Wings are in the market for a backup goalie still, and if it’s not Chris Osgood, Osgood says he will retire.

-Buffalo continued to spend cash, but this time it was a bit of a lower number. The Sabres re-signed Mike Weber to a multi-year contract.

-Montreal signed forward Brock Trotter to a two-way, one-year deal after Trotter spent last year in the KHL. Before that, Trotter had spent three years in the Montreal system, playing two games with the Canadiens. Montreal also signed goaltender Peter Delmas to a three-year contract.

-The Phoenix Coyotes signed defenseman Tyler Eckford and goalie Curtis McElhinney to one-year contracts each.
