NHL Mock Draft Pick #28 – San Jose Sharks

As I stated in the preview to San Jose’s selection, this team is running out of chances as it sits right now.  Frustration abounds from management, players and fans that this team that has been so successful in the regular season for so many years hasn’t had the same success in the playoffs.  There could be a rebuild in the Sharks’ future and that could begin as early as this pick, who will be expected to be a building block not for the near future, but a few years down the road.

Jared’s Analysis – San Jose goes for another Ottawa 67’s player, a junior club that has been a pipeline for Sharks picks in the past (5 times in the last 6 years).  The relationship between 67’s GM (and former coach) Brian Kilrea and Sharks GM Doug Wilson (himself a former 67’s player) goes a long way back.  Wilson trusts Kilrea’s system and the players it produces.  Prince will join Logan Couture and Jamie McGinn as former 67’s on the current Sharks roster.  Prince will need to fill out, but he skates well and could play a scoring role in the NHL some day.  He isn’t spectacular in any one area, but he does everything well.

TOP 5 Prospects in the system: Cody Hodgson (C), Anton Rodin (RW), Sergei Shirokov (LW), Jordan Schroeder (C), Bill Sweatt (LW)

NEEDS: The Canucks will be answering questions about the playoff collapse for months to come.  However, they must get back to work quickly and the first order of  business is addressing the system.  Cody Hodgson was once a blue chip prospect but seems to have fallen out of favor with Canucks brass and may need to be moved to resuscitate his career.  However, looking at the top prospects, there aren’t very many defensemen among them.  With the pending free agency of a number of blue-liners, the Canucks might want to address this position in the draft, even if the player won’t contribute for at least a couple of years.  Big David Musil is playing junior in Vancouver already, and might be a nice fit for the Canucks.
