Swede Pickup for the Ducks

NHL Mock Draft Pick #22 - Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks are looking t build on a strong season, but one that was marred by a scary injury to All-Star goalie Jonas Hiller.  His vertigo symptoms did not improve over the second half, and there might be some concern that he may not recover.  However for this pick will be used to address potential shortcomings in another area.  As I noted Sunday, there is the concern over the aging of Selanne and Koivu.  Even if both return next season, they will not be around forever.  Also the defense can use an upgrade.

The Anaheim Ducks select, from Farjestad in the Swedish Elite League, defenseman Oscar Klefbom.

Swede Pickup for the Ducks

Jared’s Analysis – Oscar Klefbom has the potential to do great things in the NHL.  He still has some work to do in his own end, but he could be a stellar all-around player, and at 6’3″ he has the size to be a dominant force at both ends of the ice.  Ranked #10 by ISS, he is a steal for the Ducks at #22.

Did Oscar Klefbom deserve to be picked higher?

Now on the clock for the #23 selection, is the Pittsburgh Penguins.

2010-2011 Record: 49-25-8  (4th Overall)

League Rankings:
Goals for:  13th

Goals Against: 6th

Power Play: 25th

Penalty Kill:  1st

TOP 5 Prospects in the system: Simon Despres (D), Eric Tangradi (LW), Beau Bennett (RW), Dustin Jeffrey (C), Tom Kuhnhackl (C)

NEEDS: The Penguins finished 4th overall despite missing two of the top 10 players in the league so they are not hurting at the present time.  Looking at the prospect list, there seems to be a nice balance, so there are no pressingg needs there.  Essentially the Penguins will be picking the player who caught their eye during the past season, who is probably higher on their draft board than anyone else’s.

1.  JT Miller, LW, USA Under-18 (USHL)

2.  Connor Murphy, D, USA Under-18 (USHL)

3.  Jonas Brodin, D, Farjestad (SWE ELITE)

4. Alexandr Khokhlachev, F, Windsor (OHL)

5. Victor Rask, C, Leksands (SWE ELITE)
